WAR PROPHECIES.
A curious prophecy is making the rounds of the Frencb newspapers.
For several years a well-known French painter of battles and military life employed a native of Brittany for his model.
One day during last July, about two weeks before the beginning of hostilities, this model arrived in the studio in a very dejected state of mind, and, in answer to a question, announced in a grave voice: "We are going to have war."
"Stop your fooling and get ready/* said the painter.
"War will be declared on August 2," continued the model in a melancholy tone.
"Well, if you know w/hen war will begin, you probably know also when it will end," mocked the ratist.
"Yes," was the imperturbable reply, "I can —the war will come to an end on May 22."
"All right, then, come and see me on Majy 23, we will see then if you were correct, and will drink, in any case, a bottle of wine," declared the painter, trying to put an end to the conversation and start workinjr.
"Impossible, I could not come, * came a sad anouncement. "Why not?" - "Because I shall be killed :'n '.he 2n4 half of November." By a strange coincidence, war W3S declared on August 2, and the prr.ph.et fell on the battlefield en Nov? iber £7. It remains to be seen wir.ie-.r the last of his prophecy will also fcjld good. Too bad, tjhough, that he forgot to add the year.
