DEFENCE NOTES.

The response to the notices sent out by Staff Sergeant-Major Tuckey to men informing them they would go to camp next week has not been so great as was anticipated. For the Mounted Kifles eight me:-, were warned, three accepted, three declined for various reasons, and no reply has been received from the remaining two. For the Infantry, out of 36 warned, only IS accepted, four declined, and no replies have been received from the other 14. For the Artillery three were warned but none answered.

For the Engineers three were warned and they have accepted. This gives the totall number warned as 50; accepted, 2-i; declined 7; no answer, 19.

The following men have sent in their acceptance: — Infantry: F. Mcl.aughlan. E. C. Nissen, A. Johnson, W. P. Williams, John Boyd, P. J. Keegan, H. D. Illston, J. Egan, J. Hill, J. C. Svenson, N. P. Batley, A. W. Anderson, J. Ahearn, J. A. Lequesne, H. Powis, James Coutts, C. Ginnane. Mounted Rifles: C. W. Hole, A. McGarvey, P. A. O'Neil. Engineers: T. O'Connor, J. Delaney. Engineers N.C.O. 's: A. Anderson, W. Inness. The following additional men have b&en warned to take the plface of those who have not accepted:'— Infantry: J. Goldie, R. E. Jones, T. H. Petherbridge, C. King, J. M. Flannigan, J. Anderson, A. Ralph. G. Bland. Mounted: G>. Reav, W. Williams.

The date for the departure of the various quotas from Taihape has been altered to the 16th insf., and the men will parade at the Tailway station at 5.50 a.m.

Those men who have enlisted but have not yet been colled up and who change their address should immediately notify the Defence office of such change of address. Notifications are sent out to the original addresses and in many cases are returned to the Defence authorities marked "Gone, no address."

Among the staff of the No. 1 X.Z. Ptationary Hospital, which was on the British transport "Marquette," which was torpedoed in the Aegean Sea on October 23rd. was Mr. Burd, formerly manager of Mr. J. Cunninghame 's fch'enrist) branch at Ohakune. Mr. Burd was a single man, 26 years of age, and resigned his position as manager to enlist. It is reported that he was drowned, and general regret will be felt in the district, where he was very well known and highly respected.
