UTIKU CONCERT.
Last evening a concert and was held in the Utiku Hall in aid of the candidature of Mrs Gilchrist in the Carnival. The evening's entertainment was arranged by Mr H. C. Cochran, of Taihape, at no little expense, and inconvenience to himself, and heis to be congratulated on the result or his efforts.
The weather was very boisterous indeed, but despite this fact there was a good attendance and from start to finish the concert went well.
Miss Broderick i s the possessor of a well-balanced voice of good range and! her rendering of her songs, showed considerable ability and promise, and was highly appreciated. Mr Gray's ability as a trombonist i s too well known to need comment, and his solos at the concert were greatly appreciated, and !he received a well-deserved ovation. Mrs Mitchell quite charmed the audience with her artistic playing on theharp and her songs, and it is much to be regretted that we did not permit of more bein? heard of thi s talented musician. Mr Bailey rendered a elarionetts solo, and proved Ihimself an experienced performer on the fine oreiesiral' instrument, his item being great l ./ ?-p----predated. Mr Tony Smith quite captured the audience by his songs, and was accorded a triple encore. Mr Heighton and Mr Kite each contributed' two songs, which were greatly appreciated. A word of great praise is dueto Mrs Plummer, who played all the accompaniments in a very artistic manner. The Taihape Orchestral Society deserve great praise for their performances last night, and the conductor, Mr Sherwin, has every reason to be pleased at the progress they have made. The society has only been in existence for a short time, and yet their playing at last night's concert would lead one to believe that tfcey were an old orchestra. We must congratulate the conductor and members on the high stnadard they have attained. During the evening Mr Hulbert, on bejhalf of Mr s Gilchrist's committee, took the opportunity of thanking Mr Cochrane for his efforts, and also thanked those who contributed to the programme. It was indeed very good of all to assist Utiku on succ ?. night, and their action was very highly ap-
predated. After the concert, a dance was held, Mr s McConchie and Messrs McConchie and Dinnison playing the dance music.
