"The wounded had a very bad time before they reached here," says Lance-Corporal W. Eedmond, of the Wellington Battalion of the Main Expeditionary Force, in a letter written from Floriana Military Hospital, Valletta, Malta, on August 17th. "The hospital treatment is splendid, and the food is of the best." Lance-Corpond Redmond also says that in the big fight against the Turks early In August, the Wellington Battalion was almost wiped'out. "I believe they were withdrawn from the firing-line early on Sunday night," writes the wounded man. "and out of about 778 of us that went into action, only about 75 answered the roll-call. Poor old Colonel Malone was in the thick of it from the start, and received his quietus late in the afternoon. All the officers I were killed or wounded. In my platoon, I am the. only non-com. left alive of those who took part in the fighting on that day. Cyril Sykes, of Masterton, was right in the thick of it, and was killed. We were pals nght through. The wounded this time are in thousands, and the list of killed M far as K^ r Zealand ta concerned >a large r than ever."
