FAMINE SCENES IN BERLIN.
WOMEN WAIT ALL NIGHT. TO BUY MEAT. (Reed 12.55 p.m.) LONDQJN, October 24. Extraordinary scenes in the meat markets at Berlin are described b,y the Yorwaerts. At one market' near the central slaughter house, “inferior, but still fit meat” was sold, and although it was not open till seven in the morning, 800 women assembled t ! ,he previous afternoon and waited all night. Only six pounds of meat were sold to each customer. Sometimes soldiers would push women aside and insist on beingserved first. Hundreds of women were daily supplied, but several were compelled to wait three nights to procure the meat. At the Andreas Hall, the crush was tremendous, the police were swept aside" and flattened against the walls; women’s hats and clothes were torn off, and these scenes occur weekly. Prices of commodities are becoming hgiher and higher. A roast joint, steak or cutlet seldom appears on the middle class table. Beef as doubled in price; are very difficult to obtain and bread of inferior quality is insufficient.
