CHEQUES AND RECEIPTS.
The attention of the commercial, producing and business community is again drawn to the fact that on and
jl after the first of November, special war revenue charges on cheques, drafts and receipts come into force. Instead of the usual penny duty on cheques, demand drafts and every sir h document must bear an ex-
tra penny, and to prevent cheques teing returned, drawers must take care that the additional penny Avar c!iarg3 appears on the face thereof. The banks tfln'ouglicut New Zealand are
having all cheque books in their stores sent to the Stamp Department to be restamped so as to obviate errors as far as, possible and for the convenience cf their customers, but there are thousands of cheques now in the hands of the community on whicili a penny adhesive stamp must be put to render them a legal document. It is because the issuing of a cheque without this adhesive stamp is a breach of the law that we are now giving this special reminder. All old cheques on and after the first of next month, bearing only the impressed penny duty stamp must have another ordinary penny f.tamp stuck on to it to make it a legal document, and to save the annoyance of having cheques returned the public must bear this legal obligation in mind. The same also applies to all receipts given for payments of sums of, and exceeding two pbunds.also to demand drafts.
