SORDID V. GLORIOUS KILLING.

For months past a squalid sensation known as “The Brides in the Baths Case,” has been exploited by the London Press. On days and evenings when it has not been practicab'e to announce some huge• holocaust of Austrians or Turks, or seme phenomenal hetaccmb of Germans, or a desperate charge through barbed wire entanglements by hairy Cossacks, the Brides in the Bath Case has been brought t> the rescue. Every newspaper from the “Times” to the “Star,” hag been killing those brides and commenting on the way they took to the water, and how they held the soap just before the archhusband Smith shoved them under the suds. Although the case has been running (in the papers) for the last six months, 1 cannot swear for certain whether Smith has been hanged. I have tried to dodge the placards which explained the Cast words and testament of Soapy-Smith, and have escaped under motor-cars when the newspaper heralds were abroad with the details of how Smith soaped his last bride. The mr, in spite of its ruth and savagery, is rich in noble and elevating episodes; but these worked-up police court sensations arc as artistically uplifting as a heap of decayed refuse.
