CARNIVAL NOTES.

' (BY THE 0.5.)

Tickets for the "(tut Fawkes and

Hard-up Dance" to be heM at Ben

. nett's Siding to-morrow evening in aid ; of Mrs. R. W. Smith's candidature are : selling like hot pies, and the function > promises to be one of the events of • the festive season. All the arrange- , merits for the gathering arc now complete, and the only thing that is ' troubling Mrs. Smiths' Committee is the question of accommodating the big crowd. The children will be again catered for on Saturday afternoon, between the honis -of L> and 4, by Miss Who nuaroa's Committee, in the Town Hall, j and thc'little ones may look forward to another delightful two hours' fun and I merriment. Father Christmas will "Sain be in evidence, and wiJl be as lavish with his favours as the Kaiser is with his iron crosses. In the even- ' big a social and dance will be held. j There will be a sound of revelry at Rangawaea to-morrow evening, and the Taihape Spoof Band will be there. Extensive preparations are being made .for the festival of joy and patriotic fervour and a heap of bullion is anticipated from the revelry. The coronation ceremonies in connection with the Carnival are to be controlled by Mr. Stan. Peyton, and what that gentleman doesn't know about spectacular displays is not worth [ learning. Complimentary references as , to the able manner in which he managed the Marton function were made by the chairman (Mr. W. McLennan) at last night's General Committee meet'ng. I The Carnival will close on Saturday, the 13th November next. The inquest will be held on the'following day. It was at Limerick the other day. h and a number of Nationalists were entraining for the front. The wife of one of the brave boys was down at the station to see her husband off, and as the train was slowly leaving the platform to the strains of "God Save Ireland" and "God Save the King," she exclaimed, with somewhat mingled feelings.' "Good-bye, Mick, and may the Lord protect you! And if you onlv give the Germans half as big a bating as you've given your poor ould wife since we've been married, you'll d—n j well come back a gineral! " The concert organised by "Our Boys' " Committee, to be held to-night in the Town Hall, gives promise of a really first-class entertainment. Besides the local favourites who have willingly come forward again to help the cause, we have performers from Marton, Mangawekn, and Huuterville, who are begrudging neither time nor expense in order to help the Committee in serving up to the public a really enjoyable night's entertainment. In securing the services of Mr. Sheriff, the Committee has done well, for his singing at the combined concert a week or two ago left a lasting sensation with his audience and a desire for more. Mr. Sheriff-is a tenor of n mean order, and his free style adds a charm very hard to resist. Of the other visiting vocalists, it i* sufficient to say that the committee bore in mind the high standard by Mr. Sheriff and can .->.*■-- the public that they are all worthy to be associated with him in a high-grade concert. Farther, patrons must not forget the pair of boots that they have a chance of 'winning, as all tickets are numbered and must be retained till' the drawing next Saturday night. The Guy Fawkes and Hard Times Dance, to be Veld at Bennett's Siding to-morrow night, is a new thought in the way of novelty dances, and being the first one on the bill should prove a prime success. The Committee having the matter in hand report that everything promises a great success. Conveyances are being arranged to take patrons out from Taihape.
