v (BY THE O.B.) At the Ohutu. AnaUfJ Picnic, to be j held on Thursday next, a beautiful cake been donated by Mrs. Ashton for a guessing competition. The writer has been asked to select a number, and the person lucky enough to guess the number or the nearest to it secures the cake. The number wifi bo be twe-en 1 and 500. The secretary of the "Red Cross''' Committee, Mr. 3. Duniar, desires me I to acknowledge tin sum ef £CS receivec by him from Booth s War Relief Fund, I also''£J9 4/ from the chairman of the | Hihitahi School Committee. The raill i employees in the Hihitahi a::d Turan= j garere districts are working >ike Tro- . jans in the interests of the "Red I Cross'' Candidate. The supporters of the Utiku representative have thrown out a r challenge to pull the best team of seven men that the committers of the other competing Queens can put in the field. The tug of war is to take place at the j Ohutu Picnic on Thursday next. I un- j derstand that there fs every probabil- 1 ity of the challenge being accepted.. I I heard one well-known sport offering ro j back the Utiku team for any part of a j tenner. i A reminder is given of the concert I and dance to be held in the Town Hall ! to-morrow evening in favour of Miss ! Carpenter '3 candidature. The drawing for the art union in connection vith last week's picture entertainments took' place last evening. Ticket No. 320 drew first prize, while the second prize went to ticket No. 48R. The prizes for this week are a geld stop-watch, a lady's bangle, and dozen white Plymouth Rock pullets. In addition to the chance of winning one of these prizes patrons get a firstclass picture entertainment and twelve votes for their favourite candidate! j And please remember also that you are !' helping the wounded soldiers by pat- j ronising the King's TLeatre, as the net ! proceeds from the picture shows during i the Carnival period go to assist our j gallant heroes—.the boys who are glv- j ing their lives for the Empire—an i for ' you. Holders of winning tickets may j obtain their prizes on application to [ the writer, at the Town Hall buildings. I ' There is a bit of quiet wagering being done, on the Carnival*. I heard a well-known resident of the town offering to take £2O to £lO last night that MisfJ Carpenter would head the poll. There was no response to his offer. The contest is still very, very open and any of the live eandiates mav win. j The Sports Committee meet in my j office to-morrow evening at 7.30, and the General Committee an hour hite-^ The concert and dance held at Ohutu last evening ,vas a big success. The Taihape Spoof Band was very much in evidence and disturbed the serenity of . the atmosphere with music, song, and story. Their effort.;? were greeted with rounds of applause. Brother Peyton.':, was in great form, and warbled in a j . manner that fairly hit the audience, j . 1 who. like Oliver Twist, we.-e loud in • ■ their demands for more. The Spoof [ , Band are' billed- to appear at Ranga- ( waea on Friday evening next, and they i are going to make the welkin ring, and I to some extent, too. The supper ar- ; rangements at Ohutu last evening were ! - excellent, and in this connection nrr.;em ; praise must be extended to Mrs. Mar- j tin. ' - . Mrs. Smith's Ladies 7 Committee ' meet this evening. The hockey match on Thursday afternnon should prove highly interesting, for both teams are sanguine of j success. The ladies have selected what i they consider an Invincible combination and the Borough Councillors feel that their reps, are capable of showing a little of their old-time greatness. TJn- j der the circumstancs, a battle royal should ensue and the win will be a mer- j iterious oae. j . 'The concert organised by "OurL Boys' " Committee for Thursday premises well, judging by the sale of tickets. The fact that ticket holders also have a chance of winning a pair of boots as well as hearing a first-class programme has proved an extra attraction, and everything promises a successful function. The Ladies' Committee of No. 4 Candidate are reminded of the meeting j to be held to-night in the Town Hall I Supper Room at 7.30.
