CARNIVAL NOTES.
(BY THE 0.5.) The Social entertainment given by Mr anj Mrs P. Mickleson at their residents, Tiniraukawa, on Thursday evening last was a huge success. There were vi&itors from all over the district, and right rqyally dad they en-
joy themselves! Expense was quite a secondary consideration to tbe genial host and charming hostess, and all the arrangements were carried out on quite a regal scale. There was a profusion of dainties and delicacies of every description, to-wlhich full justice was done by the many visitors. A fine concert programme was submitted and evoked lavish applause from the audience. The two well-known mirth-pro-ducers and* laughte'r ?_' makers!' Messrs
"Stan" Peyton arid "Sam" Powell were very much in evidence during the even-' _ing, and fairly convulsed the gathering by the comicalities and clever make-up. They, are specialists in the "hiake-up" business. - During a lull in the festivities the writer delivered a brief patriotic address after which Mr Peyton got to business with Mr H. O'Callaighan's banner, ana "• mesmerised the audience to the extent of £I2S 10/. He was still going, strong with an assortment of miscellaneous articles, including a live pig, which was vigorously protesting against the way it was being handled by the auctioneer, when the writer left fin company with Messrs C. Dymock and Geo. Bray, somewh'ere in the vicinity of cow time. It is quite safe to say t'hat after Mr Peyton had finished with his audience they would have very little bullion left. Even the small children capita- j lated to the splendlciujr of his sm.ile, the majesty of his manner, and his seduc- ] tive and alluring pleadings. It is very evident tlhat auctioneering is his strong suit. Big entries are being received for the patriotic concert competitions, to be-held in the Town Hall on Wednesday next in favouV'of Miss Carpenter's candidature. Quite a number of local bidding craters have entered for the patriotic speech and a b|ig audience ,is practically assured. Another competition which is filling well, is the std"yette competition, the time limit for which is one minute. This event promises to be one of the features of the evening's entertainment. The spelling competitions for boys and girls under 12 years and 16 years is also attracting good entries. The novelty of the Competitions should certainly appeal to the public. The Ladies' Committee of the Ohutu Pienic are working strenuously. They have undertaken to provide all the refreshments, which, by the way, are to be dispensed free. Generous offers of assistance in this connection are coming in from all over the district. The ladies are also undertaking the running of sweets and soft drink stalls, where these delectables will be sold at reasonable charges.
A very fine programme of the events.; has been drawn up for the combined Monster Sports Meeting, to be held on the Recreation Grounds, on Monday, j the 25th October (Labour Day). There | will be jumping competitions for herses and ponies, an ambling competition, Victoria Cross race (under fire).threading the needle, putting the shot, throwing the hammer, stepping the chain, golf putting, boys and gfrls races, and a number of other interesting events, 'one of which might be termed a "run and drink" competition. The competitors in this novel contest run 25 yards, then drink a. pint bottle of beer and (return to the startling point. The entries are already fairly numerous, and training for the event has already commenced. Another interesting feature »f the rircgramme is a tug-of-war between teams representing the varb ous Queen committees, seven men a side. This event already is exciting considerable interest and promises to be the piece de resistance of the day. Post entries for all events. The committee would be pleased to Tec.eive trophies for any of the competitions. "Our-Boys" committee have leeided, to make a change in their plan of campaign for next week by. replacing the usual euchre patrty on Thursday, evening by a monster concert. It has bees arranged fcr parties of performers to come up flrom Mangaweka and Marton to assist witlh the programme, and several of our local performers are also helping to push the concert along. The programme is now in the hands cf the concert committee, and v ill be published on Monday,-so that the public will have an opportunity of noting that good value is ottered.
