Miss McLaren, school-teacher at Xgutunui. thirteen miles from Otorohauga, was drowned while attempting to ford the Makararoa River. She was riding with a small boy behind her when the horse got into difficulties. The boy's father was waiting on the bank, and he rushed into the river and saved his son, but was unable to help Miss ; McLaren.
