At the Appeal Court at Wellington, during the hearing of the appeal in regard to the last of the Waikato Swamp cases, Mr C. P. Skcrrett, K.C., , threw an interesting sidelight upon the little ways of the legal fraternity. “If,” said he, “you have reason to think that the jury is likely to find in your favour, you like the issues submitted to them to be as few and as brief as possible. But, if you have reason to believe that the jury.is unfavourable, you like the issues to be as numerous as possible.’’ (Laughlev). Mr Wilford: “And as • complicated as possible.” : (Laughter.) His Honour Mr Justice Denniston: “I remember counsel saying on one occasion, ‘1 !have got 24 jury-traps arranged,’ instead of ‘issues.’ (Renewed laughter.)
