TAIHAPE BOWLING CLUB.
PRESIDENT'S ANNUAL REPORT,
The following report was presented at the annual general meeting of the Taihape Bowling Club, held at the Fire Brigade Hall iaist night (Monday. October 4th, 1915): —
Gentlemen, —
I have the honour to present rav
report for the season .1915-.IU, and in I doing so would like to express my ap- | prcciation of the fact that I occupier: the position, of President of the dim during what may be .considered the most successful season we have ever experienced. The playing seaso-n was an exceptionally long one, the green being opened for play about the middle of October and continuing until about the first week in May. Notwithstanding the unusually dry season the green withstood the constant wes, splendidly, our splendid sole of grass being the envy of visiting bowlers. The playing surface of the green last season. as compared with previous years, had improved out of all recognition, so that after the first two months it compared very favourably with the majority of the. old-established greens on the coast. Most of the credit for this very satisfactory condition may, in my opinion, be attributed to the care am* j attention bestowed upon it by our late I greenkeeper, . Mr. HiM, under the superintendence of our very capable green committee. It is one of my most pleasing duties to have to record that early in the season a representative rink from our Club challenged Palmerston North (the holders of the “Hum” Cup) and at their first effort succeeded in wresting from them on their own ground this handsome and much-covet-ed trophy.
Our Hum Cup reps, withstood five consecutive challenges on our own green from various Clubs eligible to compete, and finally lost it to Marten by the narrow, margin of. 2 points. Nor to be denied, they again challenged, and just at the close of the season met and defeated a strong rink at Bt. John’s, Wanganui, thus proving the final holders of the trophy for the season.
For the Keesiug —,ip two games were played by rinks from Taihape on the Wanganui green, he first was last by 2 points, and the second ended in a draw after a keenly contested and
exciting game
For the Wanganui District Shield
Competition, our representative teams gave excellent accounts of themselves, finishing up in third position at the end of the, season.
The usual Club competitions resulted as follows:—Chamipon Singles, Mr. Evans; Feathers (final holders), Mr. Thurston’s rink; Spurs (final holders), Dr. Boyd and Mr. Garratt.
Three rinks of players from Taihape visited Wanganui to compete in their annual Christmas tournament, and though not successful in getting into the finals they gave a very good account of themselves against some •of the crack North Island rinks.
This year is to mark an epoch in the history of the Club, as all arrangements fire now in hand for the erection of the pavilion. The timber and other material is expected on the ground before the end ‘of the present week, an it is confidently anticipated that the building will be completed before the end of the present month. Th* proposed biiiJding will be neat, commodious, and substantial, and is expected to meet the requirements of the Club until we are in a position financially to warant something of a more pretentious nature.
The decision to erect a pavilion has involved a review of the Club’s financial position and necessitated your Committee applying to the Bank of New Zealand to increase the limit of the Club’s overdraft by £l5O, supported by a guarantee from a number of the Club’s members, who have kindly consented to act ns guarantors. It is expected that the necessary arrangements with the Bank will be concluded in the course of a few days. I would ask members to give their consideration to increase the annual subscription, and feel sure you will recognise that the added convenience in the matter of the pavilion will fully warrant such increase, apart from the fact that you will find it practicality imperative in order to keep the Club in a sound financial position.
Our late greenkeeper. Mr. Hill, has been obliged to leave Taihape owing to the indifferent state of Mrs, Hill's health, and your Committee has appointed Mr. Jackson to the position. In conclusion, 1 desire to express my personal appreciation of the services of our secretary, Mr. Drayton, to whose untiring energy and efficiency is largely duo the great pleasure due derived by all hands during last season. A word of praise is due to our liady friends who consistently rolled up anr contributed in a largo measure to members’ pleasure by their presence. I feel confident that the coming season will prove a most successful one and that at its close we will be ably congratulate one another upon not only a satisfactory financial position but uoon tho success of the Club in
connection with our inter-Club compe--titions. A. JAMES,-. The officers elected for the ensuing year were as follows: ! President, Mr. A. James (re-elected)' "N iee-Prosident, Mr. J. Thurston (reelected) ; Hon. Secretary, Mr. N. E. Drayton (re-elected); Hon. Treasurer, Yarnam (re-elected); Auditor, Mr. E. B. Jennings (re-elected); Committee, Messrs. Neagle, McKenzie, De Luen, Rev. Stent, and H. Hesketh. Weather permitting, the green wiir he opened fur play (not officially) on Thursday, 14th inst.
