THE END OF THE WAR.

. Fifteen hundred million people of the earth are asking: “Wjhen will the war stop.” Th© |New York ‘Evening Journal,’ one of the anti-British papers, has this to say: —•

“As the situation stands, nobody but Germany can end the war. And Germany, could end it b'y giving in. Do you imagine she wil do that? Suppose Russia said to Germany, T am through; no more fight for me.’ That would not end the war. tlaly, France and England would say to Russia, .‘You may jbe through, but we are not. W e go on.’ i Suppose Italy said that she had made a mistake in getting into the war and wanted to get out. That would not end the war. England and France would still sajy, ‘We are not done.’ Suppose Russia, France and Italy, all three, said that they were fed up. That would not end the war, for England would, say, ‘I will not stop, I am safe on my island. I can deal with a few Zeppelins for years to come. Send a hundred Zeppelins every day and they will not kill a s many people as consumption. I am going to fight Germany by strangling her commerce. Germany is at war, and Germany will be hungry as long as I strangle her commerce. And I can strangle it.””

Hearst prints this kind of stuff to get a little sympathy for Germany. If it ha s one merit, it is tjhat of truth. The Allies may down arms, but it will not release the death-grip on Germany by one single ship. To-day the watchword of every Englishman is, “Go easy, but get the man-eater. Tighten the knot and choke him wihere he lives.”
