TEACHERS AT WAR.
NO-SALARY CONCESSIONS. j
AUCKLAND SUGGESTION DECLINED.
AUCKLAND, Sept 22
The Auckland Education Board recently suggested to the Director ot! Education that payment bo made to non-commissioned teachers, with the Expeditionary Forces of as much salary as would with tjheir military pay, be equal to their salaries as teachers. At yesterday's meeting of the Board a reply was received from the Director as follows: 'I hare to inform you that all teaefhers other than married teachers who {receive commissions are
on the same footing as members of. the Public Service, that is. they receive military pajy only and have their positions kept open for them; and, in addition, their superannuation contributions are paid by the Government. It will therefore be seen that there are no grounds on which salary efoiicessions should be conceded to teachers apart from other branches of the State scfrvice." The secretary (Mr R. Crowe) pointed out that from the Auckland district alone some seventy teachers /bad gone on active service, and, according to the scheme submitted to the director, this would mean an annual expenditure of at least £6OOO c): .£7OOO.
The chairman (Mr G. J. Garland)- It is very much easier, and mere proper, for the country to p?y £6OOO a year than fcr one man who is serving the Empire to lose £IOO. It was decided that trie letter be "received." The Chairman: I am not satisfied, nil the same.
