‘ .Tf, (BY THE 0.5,) : a • j & \ QUEEN CANDIDATES NOMINATED
Nomination of candidates for the Queen of the Carnival Fete closed last ' ♦ evening, and were as follows: No. I: Miss Whcnuaroa. No. 2: Miss Carpenter. • No, Sr Miss Forde. , No. 4: Mrs. E. W. Smith. No. 5: Mrs, J. Gilchrist. j No. 6: Miss Eng,
The Carnival Ship has been successfully launched., and may she return with a big cargo of bullion is the fervent wish of all and sundry. Everything so far is working smoothly and well, and not a vestige of a complaint is disturbing the serenity of the atmosphere. As the contest proceeds, of course, the interest and excitement will deepen, and we may expect tha keenest of rivalry—that goes without saying. Enthusiasm is infectious. I have known persons manifesting the, greatest possible interest in carnival competitions, who, under ordinary circumstances, could not generate sufficient enthusiasm to extinguish a match. My Hibernian friend happened along this morning and this is how he discoursed on the Carnival: "Now, what I want to know is what the devil did you want six candidates for? Why, in the name of all that is good and holy, didn’t you nominate one Queen, then every man Jack of us couM have voted for her! ’’
The ladies of Eongoiti have definitely decided to support the candidature of Miss Fordo, and the concert anti dance to be held at Mataroa on Tuesday evening next is to further the financial interests of the Euanui representative. A large number of Talhape folk have intimated their intention of being present, and the function promises to be a big success. The chairman of the Entertainment Committee (Mr. 8. G. .Peyton) is arranging* a fine concert programme. The meeting held at Utiku on Thursday evening last was of a most enthusiastic nature, and the hall was crowded. Miss 0 ’Conor having retired from the contest, it was unanimously resolved to select Mrs. J. Gilchrist as the representative of Utiku and contiguous districts, and (and this is the way) they like their chance. Messrs. E. Engten and J. T. Eoss were elected joint secretaries, and Mr, T. Eandolplt treasurer.
Mangaweka lias joined in the competition, and Miss Eng is tlieir nominee. This young lady is very popular, and it is said that she wil get a block vote down that way. A meeting of her committee has been arranged for Monday evening next, and the organiser has been asked to attend the gathering. . At 1 i°t night’s meeting of thie General Committee it was unanimously dedecided, on the motion of the chairman (Mr. W. McLennan), to designate the Carnival “The North Eangitikei and Waimarino Queen Carnival Competition.”
It was also resolved that the moek courts proposal to be held in the district be under the sole control of the Central Committee. The question of holding a monster sports meeting on Labour Day for the combined candidates was introduced and the feeling of the meeting was that a united effort would be more satisfactory than an individual one and more profitable and satisfactory to all concerned.
It was decided that the results of the voting for the Carnival be screened at the King’s Theatre on every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings. A hearty vote of thanks was carried by acclamation to Mr. C. McDonnell for the use of his motor-car. The General Committee will meet on Wednesday evening next.
