CARNIVAL NOTES.

THE UTIXU CANDIDATE. "OUR BOYS' " CANDIDATE. (By the 0.5.) The various committees were hard at work yesterday and there was a look of deadly earnestness on the countenance of each and every bullion -gatherer that meant business. Their movements were characterised by considerable celerity and already a spirit of healthy and friendly rivalry lias been introduced into the contest. So far, every candidate would appear to be a winner, judging by the optimistic tone of their various supporters. As one well-known gentleman remarked to me yesterday, and as he spoke he fairly radiated an atmosphere of enthusiasm: "We'll bally well fly in! " He was one of Miss Whenuaroa's supporters.

TJtiku rose Xke one man and woman last night, and in a no uncertain voice determined to do their duty to the King, country, and the brave boys at the front. The meeting, which was presided over by Mr. Gilchrist, was a good one, and it was evident from the outset that they meant business. Three candidates were nominated, and on a ballot being taken the honour of representing Utiku fell to Miss Nellie 0 'Conor.

Wainui, Moawhango, Pukeokahu, and contiguous districts will be canvassed by Mr. Gilchrist and the Organising Secretary, and each district asked to nominate a candidate. The names of the fair representatives of each district will then be placed in a hat and the first one drawn will represent the combined districts. The drawing will take place at Utiku on Thursday evening. This method of selecting a Queen is considered the fairest way. as it tends to avoid anything approaching friction or ill-feeling being introduced into the competition.

The chairman of the Executive (Mr.

W. McLennan*) and the Organising Secretary addressed the gathering at the invitation of the chairman (Mr. Gilchrist), and explained the rules and conditions governing the contest.

A big and enthusiastic meeting of Miss YVhenuaroa's supporters was held yesterday afternon. A strong- committee was formed, consisting of Messrs. D. McLennan, J. Collins, Richmond Davis, J. OTveefe, E. H. Spooner. W. Hekenui. P. Pine, R. J. Downing. Goo. Read, W. Topia, W. Wood, C. McDonell. •T. Logan, White Batley, H. Beban, P. Cameron, J. McTaggart, H. Heseback. and H. Bertenshaw. Mr. J. Scott was unanimously elected chairman and Mr. .T. Downing secretary.

The meeting decided to hold a monster sports gathering (horse events) on Labour Day (Monday, the 25th October), to be followed by a big social in the Town Hall. Mrs. J. Downing was elected chairwoman of the

indies' committee, pro tern, and a meeting of Miss WJienuaroa 's supporters will be held on Friday next, in the Town Hall buildings.

Mrs. R. W. Smith 's supporters rolled up in great force last evening, the Supper Room of the Town Hall being crowded. A strong committee was set up, with Mr. D. A. N. Train as chairman and Messrs. D. Neagle and J. Evans as Joint secretaries. The business of the evening went with a swing from start to finish and enthusiasm and patriotic fervour wer very much in evidence. It was decided to call Mrs. Smith "Our Boys' " Candidate.
