A PLAGUE OF FLIES.
The flies are a great pest in GailiP'oli. Here reigns Beelzebul, tli e god of flies. Food is black with them the instant it is set on the table. They j fill tents and shelters with their idiot < buzzing, and madden men trying to j snatch a half-four's sleep in their ,' dug-outs in the afternoon heat. They wake you in the morning, and dog your comings and goings a!ll day. In . the French and British trenches in Flanders the flies stre just a s devilish, and thW s eem to tlhrive on poison-gas and lydditg fumes. The German trenches are always close, and if the flies make you feel that life is a curse, you' have only to put your head above the parapet, and the sniper will do the trick gratis. i
