CARNIVAL NOTES.

__ _ | (BY THE 0.5.) 1 Interest in the Carnival is deepen- I ing, and although the nominations of aspitrants.for Queenly honours do not close till Wednesday next the com- > mittees of the various announced can- j didates are already hard at work. That the contest is going to be a i. one goes without saying, and the committee with tjhe most energy and en- b thusiasm ( a strong combination, by I the way) -behind it is going to take j 1 a lot of beating. There is a whisper in the air that if the Railway and Civil t Service are fortunat© enough to se- I cure the consent of a fair young lady who, I understand, ,i s being approached, to stand as their representative, then, to quote the words of a well- t known railway official, “it is all over i] bar shouting..’’ A meeting to definitely decide upon: their candidate will be ! held to-morrow afternoon. The many j friends of Mrs R. W. Smith are work-.! ing like Trojans and a monster meet- ( ing of her supporleds will be held in the Supper Room of the Town Hall ■ on Tuesday evening, the 14th inst. ( There is, some quiet work being put , in on behalf of Miss Whenuroa, and the prospects of this young lady’s' chancy are considered excellent. Mataroa and district are already enthusing and shrewd Judges have informed me j that their candidate, Miss Ford, can | just about win. So at the present June- j tore it would appear that it' all the announced candidates [had a big winning chance. I am informed that Utiku will select their representative on Tuesday evening next. And they are going to have a say in the matter, make no mistake about it'. There is every likelihood that there will he fix candidates in the fie £L and j ’ as one well-known enrhu-iast remark- i ! op to me'Dvs morning, “mav the can- | u 1 pirjr.f- wi}i\ tiie most bultfon -R»M T 'd | r 1 . „ •-vsy-’T' her win.” ■ 1 : |
