The Taihape Daily Times AND WAIMARINO ADVOCATE.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1915. PATRIOTIC FUNDS.

(With which is incorporated The Tal* hape Post Una "Waimarino Newa.)

The acknowledgment of donations by the Secretary of the Patriotic Committee (Mr. H. J. Murrell) appearing in another column, is worthy of more than passing notice. It discloses how much each little settlement in this : district is endeavouring to do to help those distressed as a result of the war. The sum of £3,908 has passed through the Secretary's hands, but this >by no means represents the full givings from this district, as some centres and organisations have preferred to send what they have collected direct to Wellington or elsewhere. This we regard as bordering on error because it has prevented the gross total being arrived at and recorded. It is probable that the district wouM make at least £I,OOO better showing if all funds had passed through the Patriotic Committee's hands. The brave efforts of surrounding settlements have contributed largely to the fund. Particularly noticeable is the amount realised at Turangarere, where the school children raised over £lO by giving a penny evening, charging a penny for admission, and selling nothing but penny articles. The mill-hands also have been exceedingly generous in giving a day's pay. These, with.the sale of various donations, realised no less than £IOO 11/ —a splendid showing for so small a place. In referring to the list, it will .be seen- that almost every part of the district has done something, and if the •name -of: any., settlement is missed, it may. be taken for granted that its contributions have gone direct to Wellington.. It will be remembered that the Belgian Fund ■ of New Zealand has ; been systematised, and that each district throughout the Dominion now contributes in a proportionate ratio. It is good to know that the Taihape district's quota is assured for the next year or two-—in fact,'has been'paid. No matter what the occasion, whether it be social, dance, sports, or football matches, the raising of'money for those at the front has' been the prime motitve, as the list published (abundantly demonstrates. Mr. Murrell has compiled the Committee's aeJknowledgments'in a form that is readily understandable. The Belgian Fun'" 1 is amply provided for by the genercity of Mr. Studholmc, his men, Kangitikei Sawmillors' Association'—who make regular, periodical) contributionf--—and by various other gifts. The Local Relief Fund is one established to meet cases of hardship in .this disrr;--1 arising out of the Avar, althorgh. not necpp.'-udly for the wounded mew j&ero-

selves, but rather for those who arc in some way dependent on thorn. Such a fund is rendered necessary, as no legislative enactment can possibly inclu< : such cases as is desired to meet. Mr. Mtfcthew Morrison scorns to have fully realised this, as he lias added/tc- that fund the handsome sum. of £ 145. The Mayor's Wounded .Soldiers' Fund has been well-supported, when it is borne in mind that much money has been given that has not passed through the Committee's hands. When the holding of a Carnival' was first suggested, efforts were commenced, notably by Mrs. Whenuaroa, and the amount that that lady raised was. earmarked for the sup-, poet of any .Queen Candidate the Maori people might nominate. .Mr. J. C. .CoiJi'ns was.just at that time leaving New..'Zealand on a holiday to the Islands, and lie left £lO for the Carnival. Fijnd.. These two amounts have cons.ecieuntly been handed #ver to the Carnival Treasurer (Mr. A...JS. Wakeman), to be used for the purposes stipulated., Mr. Murrell's statements have always been open for Tress use. • uul we congratulate him on the thoroughness with which he has performed the honorary task, more esncciai'ly as he is about to relinguish it to take up a much more arduous and hazardous one. Mr. Murrell will shortly go into camp in" preparation for going to the front.
