MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1915. THE TAIHAPE MEAT FREEZING WORKS.
AND WAIMARINO ADVOCATE
(With which ia Incorporated The Talh&pa Poet c ahS Wairaariao New«.)
Another very important stage in the progress of this town and district will shortly he reached, that is the completion of the immense works for meat freezing purposes that arc-being erected at Winiata. The buildings : and machinery are in a' fairly ■ ..forward state, and the foundation stone, which might have been laid earlier so far as the progress of the works are concerned, is to be laid this day week, by -the Prime Minister. This district has much to congratulate itself in, inasmuch as its farmers have not allowed meat companies not composed of bona i fide farmers to jump in and prevent the possibility of establishing a profitable concern of their own. We find meat companies in other parts of the Dominion building wmrks in various places, and particularly well-favoured is the southern portion of the North
island in their eyes, but they have igaiu ‘ ‘ missed the bus, ’ ’ first at Mas:erton, now at Taihape. It may be said that no other district presents such prospects as this does for an unopposed outlook so far as the erection of other works are concerned ,and also in connection with the rapid increase ia the production of stock for freezing purposes. Farther south the land has reached a stage of very near, if not quite, its maximum production (if meat for while this district has only just got on the wmy and is capable of vfist developments for many years to come yet. "We should 'not be far wrong in saying that present production' wils probably be doubled as land arrives at a more forward condition Of' settlement, and with freezing works at hand where ten or ten thousand sheep can be passed' over in-' stantly they are in' the most profitable condition for selling. This convenience will, of course, add to farmers’ profits and benefit all business': in the town, for increased spending power is a corollary of increased profits. The laying of the foundation stone 1 of the freezing works is an occasion of
more than commonplace importance. In addition to the Premier and the member for this district being- present, it is almost certain that several other members of Parliament will be present, showing that they fully realise what the establishment of such works really mean to the district. Invitations have boon sent by the Company to representative men throughout the whole district, so that with Parliamentarians,. an d shareholders the gathering will bo both large and representative, more especially as train accommodation has been arranged for to take psc-
ness the cerembny, also for their return after it is over. The Prime Minister w ill lay the stone about noon and every other arrangement is made to tit in with this. Business houses in town will be asked to close their shops for the afternoon, from 12 o’clock midday, so that all may participate in the auspicious event. It is probable that Mr. Massey will find it convenient to deliver an address in the Town Hall the same evening; an invitation has already been sent to him in this connection.
