COUNTRY TELEPHONES.
Some few weeks ago Mr. R. W. Smith, Member of Parliament for this district, was asked by the Wanganui County Council and the Kaitieke County Council to support resolutions passed by those bodies, respectively, asking that Post Office regulations be amended to allow telephone exchanges with from thirty to fifty subscribers to be open between the hours of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. No doubt realising that this would give much needed convenience to v. very large number of settlers, Mr. Smith brought the matter under the Minister's notice, and he has now been informed that it has been decided to concede the requests, but to provide for the payment of additional! attendance required the annual fee will have to be raised by one pound to each subscriber. This amount, the Minister remarks, will barely cover the cost to the Department of the extra attendance.
