MATAROA PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE.
IN AID OF N.Z. WOUNDED SOLDIERS. A Monster Dance and Sale of Goods wa s held in'the Mataroa Hall on Friday; August 27th. The hall was tastefully decorated with evergreens and flags. There were some 200 pecple present'. 'The ladies' stall of Fancy Work was a credit to th& ladies' commutes, who iiiad worked very hard to make everything a success, and from which they netted some thirty odd pounds. The evening's entertainment was opened fcjy the singing of "Rule Brlttania " followed by an appealing speech by Mr R. W. Smith, M.P. On the conclusion cf Mr Smith's speech, the ilcc'&l school children gave two interesting items (a patriotic song and the wand drill) under tin caprDie management of their teacher, Mrs Kennedy. Mr Casey fined 2/ for burning New Zealand. Mr Chase fined 10/ for overloading his car. Mr Te Emma caused
great merriment through his wit in disposing of goods;, also bis clerk, Mr G. Terry.
Dancing was indulged in at intervals during the night., and wa s kept up till 5 a.m. Messrs R. Kilkodi|y and R. Donald .acted as M.'s C, and Mr C. Cleaver a s stage manager. The music wa s supplied by musicians, from Taihape, Mr and Mrs Foss kindly playing the extras. The catering was supplied by Mr Butcart, of Taihape.
The takings are not yet known, as there are a lot of outstanding donations to be collected. The secretary duties Shave bean ably carried out by. Mr T.
