SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP CONTESTANTS IN GOOD FORM. WANGANUI, This Day. Webb and Han nan are both in solid training here for the sculling match, which is to take place in three weeks. By a collision in the Avenue this morning, between a motor car and a motor cycle, the rider of the latter, a youth named Lampitt sustained severe injuries, which included a badly smashed nose. Correspondence relating to the Mit-'chell-Murphy fight for the middleweight championship, which the referee no contest on the grounds that the men were not trying, were read at a meeting of the Waikato Boxing Association. Statements by both contestants were put in. Murphy said he tried throughout Mitchell stated that lie was approached by Mr F. Hand, president, and W. Jordan, a member of the executve, asking him to prolong the fight. He could have knocked • Murphy ' out. In. a jocular manner, they said, "Give the public a show for their money." J Both men were disqualified for six [ months. MUNITIONS OF WAR. QUESTION OF MANUFACTURE. ENGINEERS IN CONFERENCE. WELLINGTON, Sept 3 At the invitation of the Hon. A. M. Myers, Minister in Charge of Munitions and Supplies, between thirty and forty of the leading engineers and experts of the Dominion met in conference at Wellington this morning for the purpose of considering whether it is practicable and feasible to manufacture munitions of war in this country In opening th© conference the Hon. Mr Myers remarked that the fact that all those gentlemen who "had been invited had made it their business to attend was tangible proof, if proof were needed, of th e desire of the people cf this Dominion to do everything in their power to assist Great Britain and her allies in bringing this war to a successful conclusion
The Minister explained the action taken by tfh<e Government in offering to send to Great Britain workers skilled in the manufacture of munitions, and indicated the result of the inquiries instituted with a view to ascertaining whether it. was possible to secure from any source material and plant suitable for the manufacture of, munitions in New Zealand. At his request the conference then made an inspection of an exhaustive exhibit of munitions and equipment arranged bjy the Defence authorities. Brigadier General Robin explained the requirements of the military authorities in the matter, after which the conference proceeded with the consideration of the question as to the extent in which further assistance migbt h 3 rendered. It was ultimately resolved that the tollowng gentlemen be appointed a committee to draw up a report jf possible in time to submit to a conference cf engineers Which is taking place in Chvistchurch on Tuesday next: Professor Scott, chairman (Christchlirch), Mr H H Jackson (cjaief mechanician engineer N.Z. Railways), Mr W. Pric* (of Messrs A. G. Price. Thames), Mr T Stevenson (Port Chalmers), Mr 1 j Kerr (P. and D. Duncan. ChristjcnuroM. ond Prof. Easterfield fVictria College, Wellington).
The chairman of the Otai'hape Meat and Produc e Company, Mr H. D. Eennett, has arranged with tihe Railway Department, to run a train from Taihape to Winiata on September 13, to enable residents to attend the laying of the foundation stone .of the new freezing works, which will be perform, ed by th e Prime Minister, Mr W. P. Massey. Th e train will leave Taihape soon after mid-day, and a return tram will leave Winiata at a convenient hour.
A tax on bachelors who are not going to the front Avas advocated by Mr C. Witty (Ri'ccarton), wihen speaking in Parliament last night on the Budget proposals. There were many bachelors, and wealthy bachelors, too, who had not attempted to go. They were shirking their responsibilities. It was i not a laughing matter, said Mr Witty, land if those men would not go they should be taxed. ;: ,
