In a statement regarding provision for soldiers who are returned unfit through sickness, but who may be able to light duties, the Mayor of Wellington said that he had already made representations to the Hon. A. L. Herdman, and was about to interview the Minister further. What His Worship proposed was that the men, instead of being boarded out by the Mayor 's patriotic committee, should be accommodated in an institution for soldiers who have completed their service. There were many of these men who were physically fit for certain employment, but there was a difficulty, under the present system, in getting hold of the ex-soldier just at the time that a suitable job was available. If some kind of home were established, the men could be provided for at less <i rponse to the public than if they were distributed, and a labour bureau would remove the, difficulty of placing them in positions. ' The Mayor emphasised the point that it w r as desirable that the men should be given work at an early date if they were not to become a permanent charge on the public.
