A MEAN THEFT. DANNEVIRKE, Aug. 31. A young man named George Amos Curran was fined £lO or two months’ for stealing an art union book in connection with the Paluatua patriotic carnival. The evidence'showed that he sold several tickets. The justices considered the public should be protected against exploitation of patriotic funds.
SUPREME COURT. SHEEP STEALING CASE. ■ At the Supreme Court in the Fairlie sheep stealing ease the jury fouucr the accused Dunneft not guilty. The prosecution was based chiefly on the finding of sheep on accused’s property bran’ng a “Keyhole” o.uinurk which Chapman’s sheep here. It was proved that the Keyhole was a Hawke’s Bay brought down on a large shipment that was scattered over Canterbury by consignee’s sales, and the accused Dunnett had bought some owes as well as Chapman. The sheep bearing Chapman brand was found with Dunnett’ earmark recently made, but it was on Chapman’s property, and Dunnett denied making this mark. Dunnett was recently fined for selling sheepskins with ears cut off. He had killed at Chapman’s shod and denied cutting off the ears.
EAKAHI TAUPO KAIL WAT. GOVERNMENT AID DESIRED. WELLINGTON, August 31. The petition of the Tongariro Timber Company and others, who asked for Government assistance in regard to the construction of a branch railway from Kakahi (1-1 miles south cf Taumarunui) to Lake Taupo, was reported upon t.c-day by the Native .Affairs Committee of the House, which recommended that the petition be referred to a special committee for co—siderotion. The petitioners asked that the Government should guarantee 1* debentures of the Tongariro Timber Co., both as to capital and interest, to the amount of £300,000, to build. The recommendation was adopted, and on the motion of Mr Jennings (Taumarunui) the following members were appointed as a special committee to deal with the petition:—Sir Joseph Ward, Sir James Carroll, the Hons. W. Fraser, Dr. McNab, Dr. Pomare, Messrs Lee, Veitch, Wilkinson and the mover.
