"THE JOYOUS ONES.
It may be at Ypres, it may be at Arras, the exact spot matters very little, but everywhere it was —"the Joyeux have done wonders.'' They are the fellows whose characters were too bad to allow them to be incorporated in the Tegular regiments. Roughs, ne'er-do-wells, Togues, vagabonds, the shady ones of Paris and the big towns, whose acts just fall short of positive crime, such are the "Joyous Ones," who have a made suen a splendid name for themselves. In attack they showed themselves irresistible. Their officers have no trouble with them, except to restrain their ardour. It would be interesting to know how numerous they are. The streets of Paris used'to reek with disorder :md recklessness and night, and now tln-y the quiet and orderly. The budding Apache is known no more. It seems almost too good to Ihst. One sees now the force of the argument thai r;harscter is shaped by education aal surroundings. The "incorrigibles" have been given a chance, and we disco /er that they are not incorrigible.
