DELIVERED LAST NIGHT.
A HUGE DOCUMENT. I PROVISION FOR ABNORMAL '1 liViiiS Sir Joseph Ward, Minister of Finance, in the recently-formed National Government, delivered his financial proposals last night to an excited and expectant gathering. The document is an exceedingly bulky one—so large that it would require the whole space in one issue of most country journals to reprint it verbatim. This journal has, therefore, confined itself to givingverbatim Sir Joseph Ward’s proposals for War Taxation. These are so clearly expressed by the Minister as to be understandable to everybody. ■The estimate of revenue, required without war provisions', amounts to £11,676,254, which, with a balance from last year of £149,047, makes the estimated revenue £11,825,301, a deficiency of £827,941 on estimated expenditure. This deficiency, together with estimated war expenditure is provided for in special proposals given hereunder in detail. The gross public debt is now £IOO,059,000; the net debt is £96,644,455, that is, less sinking funds, Stat& loans and such like.
