There is good news now for housekeepers who have been for long harassed with the high cost of living. The wholesale price of butter has been again reduced by twopence per pound, and th e standard brands are being retailed for Is sd. At the end of this week the pric e of the 21b loaf will be reduced from 5d to 41d delivered, or 4d if purchased over the counter. One consequence of the war is the increase in the marriage rate. One London registrar of marriages says that weddings have gone up 50 per cent, in number. Many of the bridegrooms come to the registry office when they are under orders to sail for foreign service. The increase in weddings is among a desirable class —smart young fellows and sensible, prudent girls. The registrars make marriage easier for them in deserving cases by reducing fees. In London the number of ordinary licenses issued between the outbreak of the war and the end of December was about four times the normal number. The demand for licenses has increased since then. The bridegrooms include men home on leave from the trenches, and many of them are wounded. Jewellers say that there is a steadily ncreasing demand for wedding rings in all parts of the count v.
