GERMANY AND AMERICA.
AT BREAKING POINT. LONDON, August 21. The Daily Telegraph’s New York correspondent says that in tl?e event of diplomatic severance two immediate steps are contemplated. The first is the internment of tens of thousands of non-naturalised Teutons, including many reservists. The second is the attachment of all German ships in American ports. Arrangemnts were recently made for concentrations, and a census taken of aliens. It is certain that all German-Americans continuing to preach sedition wilJ promptly be arrested. German newspapers will be subjected to rigorous censorship. The strict supervision of interned vessels to-day increased, and will not be relaxed until the crisis is past.
Bernstorff and other Embassy officials refused an interview, and were highly excited over the latest development. They fear hourly to be deprived of their wireles privilege with Germany. This would involve the stoppage of diplomatic messages and news from Germany. The latter would deprive the militant German newspapers of their greatest asset —continuous German victories and reports that Ireland is revolting, and England is clamouring for peace.
