Some thirty applications for the Engineership were received and considered in Committee. Final choice .rested upon Mr. T. Dix, surveyor, of Wanganui, at a salary of £350 per annum. Engineer’s Report. The Engineer (Mr. E. E. Dawson) reported for the month of July as follows:

, Flood Damages: The recent, floods have caused very much damage to the ' roads throughout this County. The most of the roads have been blocked by slips and in many cases culverts and fillings have been washed out. The bridge damages have not been so serious, there being only the Ararawa (Parapara Eoad) and Manganul-o-te-on stock bridge affected; the former will bp repaired at an early date, and on the latter the body of the bridge has been washed a way, leaving only the piers cables. The repair work is necessarily slow owing to the want of immediate suitable labour, but at present horse tracks have been opened and many of the roads are already open for vehicular traffic. Field’s Trai-h: The new formation work on the above road is progressing favourably. There is at present a gang of about twelve men employed and an-

proximate'".- one mile cf road has been formed. Parapara Road: The connecting two miles of new fomation, provided for by Government grant, has been completed in accordance with specifications, although the floods have since damaged the work to the extent of aobut £250. The sill of the abuttment pier on the Ararawa bridge has been forced out of place, owing to the occurrence of a slip, and lias allowed the land span of the bridge to drop at one end, thus putting the bridge out of commission for the time being; however, the necessary repairs will probably be effected within eight or tow days.

The timber for the Ohura bridge was being hauled to the site when the heavy rains blocked the road, consequent r. - the timber is now at various points of the road and the haulage of same cannot be completed until the road damages have been repaired. Matahiwi Road: The road formation work on the Matahiwi track, which, is provided for from loan monies and Aote-> Hand Board subsidy, will probably be commenced by the 23rd inst. Road Metalling Works: Tenders have not yet ben invited for the road metalling works, as many of the roads to be metalled have been blocked with slips. I -nccss otherwise instructed I will invite tenders for tin’s work to be received at the Council’s next general meeting.
