GALLIPOLI FIGHTING,
The High Commissioner reports: — LONDON, August 19. Recent operations on Gallipoli Peninsula consisted of attacks on the enemy’s positions along the southern and Anzac lines, including a fresh landing of strong forces at Suv>a Bay. The evidence of prisoners’ statements show that the Turks have been considerably reinforced with a view to heavy attacks. Our reinforcements forseallcd the enemy’s by about 21 hours. Consequently the fighting was very severe, both sides’ casualties being very heavy.
The landing at Sulva Bay was well planned and carried out by the Navy. In spite of the fact that the Turks developed their greatest strength in the Anzae region, our troops from Suvla did not make very satisfactory progress before the enemy was able to move up considerable forces from his reserves, and bring further advance at this point to a standstill). M ithin the past week all positions won have been consolidated at all points. The spirit of the troops is excellent. TURKS REPULSE AN ATTACK. AMSTERDAM, Aug. IS. A Turkish communique states: On the bank of the Anafarta, on Tuesday, we repulsed an attack and took prisoners near Seddul Bahr. An artillery combat and bomb-throwing are progressing. Our reconnoitring party remained in the crater caused by a mine which was exploded near the enemy line.
ENEMY SHELL MAKING. AT CONSTANTINOPLE. KRUPPS VERY ACTIVE. (Reed 8.30 a.m) ATHENS, August 19 Great activity prevails in Krupps’ works at Constantinople, where they are turning out two thousand shells daily.
TURKS DEFENDING SMYRNA. GREAT ACTIVITY. (Rec. 12.30 a.m.) PARIS, August 19. The Temps’ Dedeagatclv correspondent says that the Turks are busily defending Smyrna with long range cannons, brought from Constantinople. Trenches have been dug on SmyrnaVourla road, parallel with the sea. A series of small fortresses have been constructed armed with howitzers and quicklirers. Concreted metal covers, breastworks and tunnels connect the fortresses. All railway traffic between Constantinople and Smyrna has beer, exclusively devoted for several days recently to the conveyance of munitions to Smyrna.
