POISONOUS MOLASSES,

A CLAIM FOE DAMAGES

W HANGAR El, Aug IS. Judgment was given to-day by Mr. Page, S.M.. in a cow-poisoning case, Herbert Shalders versus James Harrison and Sons. The plaintiff claimed £94 5/ damages caused by prize cattle being poisoned after eating molasses supplied by the defendants. The Magistrate heM that the sickness of the cattle was due to the presence in the molasses of impurities in the form of mineral oil and a small amount of ultarmarine. He gave judgment for the plaintiff for £32 10/o and costs £27 12/9. The case is the first of the kind in this country. Leave to appeal was given. MACHINE GUNS WANTED. FOR NEW ZEALAND FORCES. Some time ago the Minister of Defence cabled to the Imperial Authorities. asking if they could supply machinery for th e manufacture of machine guns in the Dominion. He received a reply that all available machinery was being used in Britain. Sinc e then the Minister had further with regard to proposed purchase of machine guns for New Zealand forces, with funds raised by private subscription. Yesterday he received a cable stating that the War Office was grateful for the generous offer to supply machine guns, but all available are required for distribution to troops equally. They rsgro. the> cannct make a special allotment to New Zealand troops.

Mr Allen stated that he knew the War Offic 3 was securing all the machine guns they could manufacture or buy, and were distributing them to the troops in the various theatres of war in excess of th 6 normal establishment.
