THE NATIONAL REGISTER.
The Prime Minister, who has in hand the arrangements for the preparation of the proposed National Register, stated that a Bill had been drafted, and was now ready for submission to Cabinet. He expected that it would be placed before Parliament at an early date. Mr Massey mentioned that the work in connection with the Register would be undertaken by the Registrar-General’s Department. The machinery that had been devised was a good deal simpler than the machinery under the British or the Australian Act, but he had no doubt it would be 'thoroughly effective. Use would be made of the Post. Office for the collection of the information that was required. The Prime Minister had nothing to say with regard to the bearing of the National Register upon the recruiting problem. The purpose of the Register, he said, was to place the Government in possession of reliable information concerning the number of men of military age available in the regard to dependents, employment, and so on.
