AUCKLAND SUPREME COURT A FORGER SENTIEINCTD AUCKLAND. This Day. At th e Supreme Court, Peter Co.embo, alias Alexander, was sentenced to four years’ hard labour for forgery. The prisoner acknowledged a long list of previous convictions. THE PRICE OF BUTTER. REDUCED IN AUCKLOND

I AUCKLAND, August 17. The wholesale price of butter will b e reduced to-morrow by two-pence, to ! Is 3d per pound AUCKLAND, August 18. This means Is 5d per lb retail It is considered in. business circles that the prices for butter are still so high in Sydney andi Melbourne that If butter could be exported these prices -would soon ris e again in ther local market. At present, however, no butter can be exported without the express permission of the Minister for Customs. It ig probable that permission to export may be granted, towards the end of the month.

CRIMES AGAINST WOMEN. STRONGER MEASURES URGED. AUCKLAND, August 17. In the Supreme Court this morning-, the Grand Jury made a presentment to Mr. Justice Cooper on the subject of offences against women, and expressed surprise that some attempt had not been made to deal with such offences by legislation. The foreman of the jury spoke particularly of offences against baby girls, saying: “ These arc atrocities which it is difficult for the Grand Jury to regard with any degree of equanimity'. They are monstrous crimes.-’ The Grand Jury thoujght the punishment for such crimes should be made much more drastic.

Hiss Honour thanked the jury, and assured them he would bring the matter before the Minister for Justice. He suggested at' the same titme that much could be done in the way of preventing such crimes by public vigilance.
