VARIOUS INTERESTING ITEMS. (Reed 9.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. There has been a record recruiting week in New South Wales, 6,230 enlisting. The steamer Empire, recently at Hongkong, estimates that 10,000 people at Caneon perished by fire alone, including 1000 soldiers, who were engaged in rescue work, 2,500 shops were destroyed. Robbers attacked the starving e scapees, shooting them down Hike animals. When found they were destitute.

In th e meantime, he asks for suggestions of improved methods of facing the difficulties. SEDITIOUS LANGUAGE. SYDNEY, This Day. James Lalcr, mine manager, grandson of Peter Lalor, ot Eureka stockade fame, was remanded "on a charge of making a statement likely to prejudice recruiting. The information alleged that accused used, in a hotel, the words, "this war was a capitalist war; the King should be shot and the Queen have her throat cut." Proscuting Counsel, in securing a remand, s aid he was. considering whether accused should not be arraigned on th e more serious charge of seditious utterances.
