MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Kaitieke County Council Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: From the Telgeraph Department that they were, about to build a telephone line cut from Owhango to near Mr Ccckburn's residence, and a number cf trees dangei'cus to the road and Hue would need to be removed —Council will tell all trees on the roadside which may be likely to damage the, telephone line. Fro mthe Commissioner cf Crown Lands, that the matter re cutting trees for a width of two chains from the Waimarino-Retaruke road must stand over-.till it is determined whether the land adjacent to th e road is to be thrown open for selection.—Received. From the same, replying to Council that he wa s having a report made on the advisability of opening up for closer settlement the Crown lands near Waimarino station. —Received. From Mr E. Linthorn, -secretary of the Kakahi Ratepayers' Association. asking Council per resolution to instruct the engineer to lay off the permanent levels of the Kakahi township reads. —Engineer will fix the levels as soon as ciroumsctances will permit. From Mr H. E. We.dde, Kaitieke, '.hat it appeared to him that the "thirds" were not being utilised.—To be attended to. From Messrs P. O'Shea and Company, Hikiiiiutu, re, tha'.r contract en the Hikimutu-Owhango road. They expected to complete the work in two days when the flood washed half the filling away. Timber and legs came down the creek, shifting the culvert and breaking it asunder. They asked Council to compensate them for fhe.ir loss, amounting tc £3O 15/ —The engineer said the trouble was that there wag a temporary bridge, near the culvert. From the Department rf Internal \ffars re rate exemption iu the Ksi- : tieka County that Council's request 'had been. to the I/inds Departemnt.—The chairman, r.-irl hr- had "eo.n the Commissioner rf Crown La:ids about ttr's exemption, and he assured him that there would be no more of these exemptions made in future. He saw the harm it would be to local bodies. The chairman also said that he called at the Under-Secretary's office. where he learned that the exemptions only applied to the conditions existing' when they wero given, and these conditions did not now exist. They were taking- the Crown Law officer's online i on the matter. From the Public Works Department re deviating the Kotura Road, Kaitiekg end, through the properties of Messrs Crocker, Beechey and Sheehan, or of erecting a bridge, across the Retaruke River. They enclosed a copy of a report on same. —The engineer stated that the bridge had been decided upon. From th e Department of Lands, that tli 6 . District Surveyor had been instructed to widen the road to include the existing formation in the town of Rauniniu.—Received.
