ON THE RUSSIAN FRONT. THE ATTACK ON KOVNO. REGIMENTS SLAUGHTERED. , PETROGRAD., August 13. The desperation, impetuosity, and recklessness of the Germans in smashing regiments to pieces against the Kovno forts recalls their tactics Jn Belgium. An entire army is concentrated opposite Kovno, with masses of heavy artillery hastily brought up. After a tornado of projectiles the infantry are sent forward in successive ivaves regardless of the fearful havoc wrought by the steady Russian ni-ich-ine-gun and rifle fire. The only result is that the enemy has approached the outer works live miles, from the main girdle. ! i RUSSIANS' OPERATIONS. PETROGRAD, August IS. Official: We repulsed German attempts to overwhelm our outposts in the Riga region. Our troops are rdvancing successfully and pressing the enemy in the direction of .Taeobstadt and Dvinsk. We occupied Kovarsk and Toviany north of Vikomir after a fight. We continue to repulse assaults west of the Niemeu as far as Jessia. Germans made persistent attacks on the roads from Hotza and Suiabova. We assumed a counter-offensive on both sides of the Kieff-Maiken railway. We repulsed the enemy with heavy losses between the Wieprz and the Bug. Their losses were especially severe east of Ostroff, where the German dead lain enormous heaps. The Germans in force on the 1013 - bombarded Aland and the Skerries lighthouse, but put to sea on the ap-' pearancc of our warships. IS PETROGRAD THE GOAL? INFLUENCING THE BALKANS. LONDON, August 13. The Daily Mail's correspondent ar Petrograd says: To-day the first hint i was given of the possibility of an endeavour by the enemy to reach Petrograd. The Novoe Vremya declares that the Germans are trying to develop their operations in the regions adjoining the roads to the capital with the object of bringing into play a new lever for pressure on the Balkans. An advance against Petrograd is considered unlikely unless the Germans obtain command of the Baltic. The Rnss' : Baltic Fleet is regarded as a safeguard for the security of the capital. i Coptenhagen states that the German Baltic Fleet is using Libau as a base.
