THE FRENCH GENERALS.
Although a great many old generals have, been rep.:aced by younger men, hte French arrniss have owed their success tlil now to sexagenarian commanders. In a couple of years General Joffr e will b e seventy, yet he has been constantly at it for the last ten months, and i s as tough as ever. Pau, Manoury, D e Caste.neau, and Foch, in evening dress would be regarded as de%htful old gentlemen. We have ; not been allowed to know what this or that general has done B or is doing so it is difficult for me to speak of exp!oit s of the younger generation of commanders. Fet with confidence; and with infinite satisfaction I can pcint to ".the domination of General Couraud as Commander-'n-Ch.'ef of the Expeditionary Forc e in the East.. He will ■jarry the French flag very il-Vrh. He ; q r.~>iy A~ yr-i-c; 0 f r ; - 0 , and it seems hut the otto/r day that h e was "ColGrurand.
