GERMAN SPY IN AMERICA.
AN AMAZING HOAX. The New York Tribune declares that Herr Meyer Gerhard, the special envoy of Count von Bernstorff, who is on his way to Berlin has perpetrated a gigantic hoax on the State Department. According to the evidence now in the hands of the Tribune, he is none other than Dr. Aufred Meyer, a Privy Councillor of the first rank, and Chief of the Department of Army Supplies in Imperial German Ministry of War. Under the name of Meyer Gerhard he came here and used the post he occupied under the Red Cross Society to purchase ammunition. The real Dr. Meyer Gerhard has not been out of Germany since the beginning of the war. The much-advertised Red Cross propaganda is, in fact, a farce, and Meyer •came over to the United States to buy «uch war supplies as he could obtain, and, incidentally, to learn the condition of the country as regards military Unpreparedncss. Dr. Meyer is now taking to Germany information of the greatest importance which he was able to acquire in the course of his dealings with various munition brokers and manufacturers. 1 ' Mr. Bryan Hood-winked. *' One of Dr. Meyer's efforts was to buy a large number of Krag rifles from the United States Government, after which he attempted to purchase cartridges manufactured for the Allies. It is said by one newspaper that Count Bernstorff knew of his activities, and that Mr. Bryan was hoodwinked into obtaining Dr.. Mejer a safe contact. Another newspaper states that Ilerr Meyer Bernard really sailed, but took Alfred Meyer with him as his seeretaTjs This paper states that Count Bernsfcwff was aware oC, the duplicity.'
