ENTERTAINMENTS.

“A SCRAPE O’ THE PEN.” Playgoers who bo enjoyed that delightful comedy, “Bunty Pulls t:uStrings” will this evening, at the Town Hall, be introduced to another production by the sSme author. “A Scrape o’ the Pen,” although written earlier than “Bunty, ” did not receive its long premieres until after the long ai'vi of ” Bunty, [ r when it-:was 'prodirckl with groat success- at the Comedy Theatre. Its success was assured by ho receptaicn given to its predecessor, out iu Scotland, -where ‘‘Bunty ” had [ not, received such-notoriety -as in Loudon, “K Scrape o’ the Pen” played to enormous houses, the Company, with Mr. ’and Mrs. Graham Moffat in the old people parts, breaking the records of practically every theatre visited. This, in a measure, was considered due to the fact that in the latter comedy Mr. Moffat had more faithfully depicted the old customs and superstitions of Scotland than was the case with “Bunty.”, This evening, Mr. Moffat will) have the support of practically a new Scottish combination, including Miss Mattie MeLellan (Jean Lowther), Miss Margaret Noble (Flora McGilp), Miss Gertie Henderson (Mss. Baikie), Mr. Alec Hunter (Hugh Men'zies), and Mr. Robert Purdie (Alee Inglis). These artists come to Nsw Zealand with a big reputation gained in Sydney. during the long run of “A Scrape o’ the Pen,” which only ended at the Palb.ce Theatre on 9th July. In addition, all the popular favourites of the “Bunty” players will be seen in new roles, including Mr. and Mrs. Moffat as Mattha and Leezie Inglis, The production is under the direction of Mr. E. J. Carroll. Box plan is available at Finch’s Bazaar, where day sale tickets cn be obtained. ’ “HINEMOA” OPERA. NEXT SATURDAY NIGHT. Those who are interested in the oldtie life, usages, and customs of the people whose land we have occupied, will have an opportunity, probably the only one that will ever be given, of seeing a talented company of Maoris perform one of the most beautiful of Maori legends in operatic form. Mr, Alfred Hill, the clever young New Zealand composer, has presented this legend in opera form and made almost every corner of the world conversant with its pathos and beauty. Now the subject of Hinemoa’s sove romance has been musically adapted for representation by a company of Maori vocalists and eators. This company has been induced to tour the North Island so as to allow those who canont visit Rotorua to see a purely Maori opera by purely Maori company,’ A most successful season of one week has just been finished in Auckland, where the daily papers have been profuse in their praises of the production. On Satur-. day night the opera “Hineraoa ” will be staged with magnificence, transformations and effects being plentifully used to show up the subject to the utmost. Those who were fortunate enough to hear the Maoris when they were last in Taihape, giving concerts in aid of the Belgian Relief Fund, know how charmingly they sing, and those who did not hear them should not miss tlie opportunity to do so that will be given on Saturday night.
