MATAROA NOTES
(Own Correspondent.) The Mataroa Patriotic Society is to be congratulated upon trie result of the stock sale held on Wednesday J*jt at the Taihape saleyards. The proceeds amounted to about £4?. Last Thursday night a public meeting was held in the Mat a tom Hall to consider the most appropriate manner of giving the Mataroa contingent of volunteers a “send-off. •’ Th-ro was a big attendance, more than half being ladies. It was decided to hold a social and dance on Friday night, the Pith insL, and for those who do not dance a. smoke social will-be held on a date .to be fixed. On Friday night last a very enjoyable “send-off’’ was given to Messrs H. Craig and D. Davoy, who are going to the front. They were employed at Mr. K. W. Smith 's mill. The Mill Hall was comfortably filled, and dancing and songs formed the evening's entertainment. During the evening, the two volunteers were respectively presented with (1) a wristlet watch and smoking outfit, and (2) a Gillette .shaving set and a pair of military hair brushes, as tokens of esteem. On Saturday morning news of the death of Mr. George Fitzsimmons reached'Mr. R. W. Smith’s mill. The late Mr. Fitzsimmons, up to the time of volunteering, was an employee at the mill, and was held in high esteem by his felllow-workmen. He was killed in action at the Dardanelles. He leaver a widow and three children to mourn his loss. Immediately upon the receipt of the news, the mill was dosed down for the rest’ of the day, eat-of -respect ; fd?‘. the' ’ olceyhed : wa rior.. l : . ,
