TRADE WITHIN THE EMPIRE. TAIHAPE PROPOSAL ADOPTED. BY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CONFERENCE. WELLINGTON, Thursday. A long discussion took place at the Chamber of Commerce, to-day, on the question of Empir e Trade. The subject was introduced by a motion moved by a Wellington delegate, urging the advisability of inaugurating a movement to take advantage of th e suspension of trade with the e>n'emy countries, with a view, when peac e was declared, of diverting such trade and developing tradp, within the Empire and with Allied nations. It was also proposed to undef-take the formation of a league with the following primary- objects: . (1) Affording the people of the Dominion an opportunity of uniting as one recognised body to actively support the cause of British Emp'ire Trading (2) Assisting one or mor e of the New Zealand patriotic funds by applying th e net profits of the League f'-<r thig purnose.
It was urged by one of the speaker? that Germany had pandered to our tastes with low freights, cheap goods and steamship lines. She had sugared the pill and we had swallowed it, and perhaps some of the money we had rKivided Germany with was being returned in the form of ammunition, resulting in such fearful British casualties. New Zealand should do its part by foregoing its passion for shoddy foreign goods, and paying a little more for good British manufactures. The Conference finally adopted the motion to encourage; Emp"lre Trade.
