MEAT FOR IMPERIAL USE,
A HUGE UNDERTAKING
WELLINGTON, July 29
Our purchase of meat on behalf of the Imperial Governfent passed the £3,000,000 mark to-day, said the Prrime Minister 'this ’evening. “This enterprise, as the figures indicate, has grown to very large proportions indeed. in spite of the shortage of ships, and it has been of material advantage to th e people of the country since the farmers have befell assured of an undisturbed market at good prices for their ; stsjlck.” Mr Maskey addled that the; publication of the ,figures would show the public that the shortage of ships, while a serious matter, had not been quite as grave as some people had been led to believe. The total amount of meat exported since the outbreak of war was rather grater than the total for the preceding twelve months. The Dominion had been a million earcases to the good up to the end of February, in other words, the exports had been a million caucuses above the norma-. The shortage of ships had occurred in the succeeding three months.
