I understand the laying of this drain across Main Street will be proceeded with in the course of a day or two. That portion of Main Street extending from th e Bank of iSEew Zealand, foi a distance ! of 3 chains beyond"' the" Post Office was found to bej very wea&: in regard to the quantity of metal on the road; in consequence, a considerable amount j had to be added 1 " in plans' to st'reng- i then the roadway; in addition to 18 yards of our own-metai; w quantity of, J approximately, S(F yards from the Railway Department has beeu used. d creek is 18 feet wl/.e, and the arc ii underneath, to carry storm water, i a Sft by Oft to do away witJa the bridg | and straighten ana! w-ides the roa. , jat this point, them are two metfood ) Iby which this could, be. accomplished • I Firstly, by constructing a storm wa i ter culvert in concrete. sft by 4ft ii j area, and 40ft in length-, in the- exist iing bed of th e creek, and widening the road Secondly! by tunnelling and putting in a ddIHS of similar dimensions as; in concrete, from the river side of the road adjoining the present bridge, aittf coming, out at a point 84ft distant, to with the creek ere it takes a sweep round to go under the bridge. Tire puttingin of a tunnel would, iri-looking to the future, do away with.-iai considerable amount of work, in the event of jthe remaining portion cf this creek being concreted in. This method would! 'also give th e full width of tlfe road: for future filling and levelling; where it is mostly required, namely; at th© intersection of the various roads at thf s - point. The length of th e suggested concrete culvert, while supplying' sufficient for width and area of stormwater, will not allow of the complete* ffllmgr in at this point, unless thV culvert is considerably extended to meet the creek where it runs parralleil with the footpath.

Of the two methods proposed, I would suggest that your Council give favourable consideration to that of tinnier, as I am of the opinion, that it wjlT be equally efficient and more eccK mimical in the end, when the roadwagr/ is finally widened and graded. ~ ESTIMATES OF COST. 7.
