MILITARY FUNERAL

The first funeral! cf a. military nature to take place in Taihape occurred on Tuesday last, -when the remains of the lute Lance-Corporal John Carville Munro, who died at Trent]]am Camp, were conveyed to their last resting place in the Taihape. Cemetery. A short and solemn service was first conducted at the Presbyterian Church by the Rev. R. H. Catherwood. At the conclusion of the service the funeral cortege, which was one of the kmgest recorded in Taihape, commenced its journey, the Taihape Municipal Baud rendering appropriate music. The firing party and buglers took the lead, followed by the Band, and then, came the body and bearers (two troopers from Trentham), the conveyance also being driven by a comrade from Trentham. The chief mourners came next, followed in order by officers, mounted men, and Trentham boys, Railway Engineers, D Company 7th Regiment, No. 43 Company Senior Cadets, Rifle Clubs, and National' Reserve. As the bearers carried the body into the cemetery the band rendered the "Dead March in Saul." The Rev. Catherwood conducted the service. As the coffin was about to be lowered three volleys were fired by the firing party, and the bugles sounded "The Last Post." And thus were the remains of Lance-Corporal Munro. one of New Zealand's honoured soldiers, given the last military honours. Although he had not reached the firing-line be was daily longing to be fighting for his country, and, if he had been spared, he would, without doubt, have been one of New Zealand 's heroes.
