Powers, Avhen friends assembled to bid farewell to Mesrs. Cbliihs- Bros, and D. Lee, who have been on leave from Trentham, prior to their departure for the front. During the evening several toasts were proposed' and replied to, and songs, admirably rendered, enlivened the procodings. Everyone wished the guests good luck and a safe return, the party breaking up in early hours of the morning.
A champion economist has turned up in a fecal body in the vicinity of Dunedin. A certain' committe had under consideration the visiting of the cemetry. with a view to inspecting the fences and hedges. The question arose whether a ’bus or a motor-car should « be hired as a convenience. Then an econ ornist arose, and, with all the solemnity befitting the adjustment of such a momentous matter, suggested that the committee take advantage of a funeral, attending as mourners, and thus save the ratepayers 15/- at least. He knew a man avTio had died that day, and thought that he would be able to use his influence to have a mourning carriage set apart for the committee. A newspaper was sent for in order that tile time the funeral started might Iv ascertained. There was an atmosphere of dejection in the committeeroom for the rest of the evening, ns 1 tiie notice stated that the burial was to take place in another cemetery not under the committee's control.

News 4 -- of a murder in Samoa was brought by' pasengers of the steamer T( fua, which arrived ah Auckland on Sunday. Tlio victim was a coolie emplc yed on a plantarioit some distance fro;m Apia, but when the Steamer left thel police had not identified the author of t lie crime. The-"man.; had been attacked with an axe, and his body' was horri bly' mutilated. During- the morning on which the man was killed, alb the other coolies were' in Apia, having being" summoned there as witnesses in a court case, so that 1 it is considered that the prospective absence- of the murdered man’s' usual’ companions was taken into consideration' by r the perpetrator of the crime. News was also received by the- Tofua that a murder was committed on the morning- of July' 8 t>y an Indian at Sonabula; in the Fiji group. The victim was a - girl about 15 years of age. She was shot by the murderer, who then paraded the neighbourhood with a -plentiful! supuP of ammunition. A party of police left Suva immediately 1 for the scene of the crime, and it was afterwards learned that the Indian had been:'shot..
