WAR IN CARICATURE.

EXHIBITION BY FRENCH ARTISTS

Two rival salons of ;liumorist anti caricatur e artists, brought together in. fraternal union by the war, held “varnishing day’’ on May 22 in the gallery of the Rue la Beetle, Paris. The place of honour is accorded to Steinlen, wha exhibits the pictures of refugees, abandoning their homes in Flanders. Th e drawings have a pathos and power suggestive of Hogarth. Among the pictures by Forain is oneof a motor ambulance bearing womuledL near the fighting lin e and flying a Geneva cross ensign. The young lieutenant is giving this command to th© driver: “Conceal the flag at onc e or else you will be killed.” Abel Faivr e and Forain both deal with th e everlasting question, How long will the was last? The shows a fat citizen reading a newspaper in bed and exclaiming: “Good heavens- "What a long time it takes!" The latter depicts a fashionable young embusque at Mc-nt 9 Carlo, seated at a. .supper table with a frisky demi-mon-dains, to whom he exclaims: “Strang© it is w e don't advance quicker!” \ Another picture by Faivre also pleases the public. It represents a stalwart, opulent, blond, Berlin matron, circulating in her motor car among th e towns of Belgium, examining the ruins through her eyeglasses and saying: "Why, is it only this that they make such a fuss about?”

Thsr 0 is a series of clever and inoffensive caricatures of the Kaiser made by the deceased artist, Caran d’Ache, som e ten or twelve years ago. There are excellent works by Willette L-eadre and Alb ert-Gu illaum e Roubile. Sent exhibits some biting caricatures nf the German Crown Prince. A collection of drawings by Hanst completes on e of the best caricature salons seen for a long time in Paris, comprising upward of six hundred numbers.
