WHAT I SAW iN ROME. Mr Carlyle Smythe, the well-known Australian writer and entrepreneur, left Sydney for England on a Dutch boat some four months ago. During t|he voyage th e German submarine blockade was declared, and the Dutch captain took no risks, but landed his Smythe went immediately to Rome, and for a month lived in the midst of the most of the principal towns in Northern Italy. What he saw and heard during this sojourn he tells the readers of “Life” in the July issue—just published. It is a wonderfully Interesting and informative article, for it deals not only with the attitude of Italy, but with the possible movements of the Balkan States and of Holland. This is the first of a series of articles that Mr Smythe will contribute to “Life” from the War Zone, the second, describing “Paris To-Day,” being already on its way. Mr Smythe will travel through France and Belgium—or such f it as is available —and “Life” naturally considers itself fortunate in having so able and well equipped a correspondent "at the front.” Mr Smythe’s article in the July issue makes a very timely supplement to the six splendid War articles from the pen of Dr Fitchett These articles, of course form the backbone of the current Issue of “Life,” but are by no means its only features. There is, for example, an excellent article in celebration of the centenary of Waterloo, a capital review •’ of the book of the month and a wide range of subjects—Art, Science, Literature, Sport, and Fiction-covered by the usual departments. “Life” sells locally for sixpence; but, if unobtainable, a 3/ postal note sent to T. Shaw Fitchett, 376 Swanston Street, Melbourne, will bring it by post each month for six months.
