CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. The monthly meeting of the executive of'the Taihapc Chamber of Commerce was held on Friday eevning. Present: Messrs. James (president), 2\ eagle, McLaughlan, De Latour, A. E. Wakeman, McCormick, Parker, Champion, and Jennings (secretary). Among matters submitted to the meeting the question of the sub-divi-sion of lands in this district, was mentioned. It was decided that the matter should be deferred to a later meeting. With regard to the Taihapc-Napier Road, a reply was received from the Minister to the effect that, the expendi tore of £SOO for this side had been offered to the Rangitikoi County Council in November last. So far, however, that body had not submitted any proposal for carrying out the work. The Minister also promised to consider requests for a sum to complete the balance of the work when compiling the next Public Works Estimates, Immediately on receipt of the letter, the Chamber got into touch with the Ran ritikei County Council asking- v. h; - steps the Council proposed taking irthe direction of having the work pre cocded with. In reply, the Conner stated that there would be no advantage in undertaking the work unless the full amount of the estimate (£1,450) was available to construct the road right through down to the Rangitikei River. The County Council undertook to endeavour to have an additional sum placed on the Estimates to enable this to be done. The Council of the Taihape Chamber of Commerce has now asked Mr. R, W. Smith, M.P., to
see the Minister and ascertain the Department’s intentions and to endeavour to get the full vote, and failing this, the Chamber proposes urging the early expenditure of the £SOO already voted. The president submitted a draft of a resolution to be Submitted to the conference to bo held in Wellington, asking the conference to formuate an “ All-for-Pritain League” as proposed by the Taihape Chamber of Commerce, in the letter sent to various Chambers of Commerce throughout the North. Island. The form of the resolution was approved by the mooting and it was decided to forward the remit to Wellington.
The president (Mr. A. James) and. Mr. W. McLennan were appointed delegates to attend the conference of Chambers of Commerce to bo held in Wellington on August 4th, sth, and 6th.
With regard to the letter sent to the Minister for Railways by the Chamber in reference to the Improvement of the trucking yards, n reply was received’ from the General Manager of Railways stating that by direction of the Minis- * ter he had to inform them that the; district officers met the stock agents' ando thers interested, and, after discussion, it was agreed that certain improvements were necessary, including a holding yard, and a separate approach to prevent the necessity for stock being driven through the town. Instructions had been issued to have the improvements carried, out. If business increased it might be necessary to remove the yards outside the station yards to a new site, but for the present the alterations proposed would meet the ease.
A letter was sent to the General Manager of Railways with regard to freight, and a reply was received from, the Minister for Railways stating that the representations contained therein had been noted with respect to the revision of the railway tariff. A letter was forwarded to the General Manager of Railways with the request that the private siding at Wininta should be converted into a publte siding. A reply was received from the General Manager stating that it had been decided to treat the aiding as a public one and injunctions had-been issued accordingly. In connection with the request of the Chamber to the Minister for Railways, that the Egmont Box Company ’s Biding be mado a passenger boohing station, a reply was received from the Minister (Hon. W. H. Kerries) 1 .statingthat the particulars have been noted and will be given consideration. In due course, Mr. K. \Y. Smith, M.P., will bo communicated with on tho subject.
